New Principals Named for Lincoln, Winchell
New principals were appointed for Winchell Elementary School and Lincoln International Studies School at the Kalamazoo Schools Board of Education meeting on April 6.
Kelly Corrigan, the longtime principal of Indian Prairie Elementary, was named the principal of Winchell Elementary School. Dionna Roberts, a long time Winchell teacher and literacy coach, was appointed the principal of Lincoln International Studies School. They will begin their new positions at the start of the 2023-24 school year.
Corrigan has been the Indian Prairie principal for 10 years. Before working for KPS, she worked for Paw Paw Public Schools for 10 years, eight as the early childhood and community programs coordinator and two years as an early childhood education teacher. She began her educational career as a long-term substitute and summer school teacher with Kalamazoo schools.
Corrigan holds a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Western Michigan University.
Roberts has worked for Kalamazoo Public Schools for 20 years, including 13 years at Northeastern Elementary School, five years at Winchell, and three years as a district literacy coach.
She also is an adjunct faculty member at Western Michigan University in the Department of Special Education and Literacy Studies, and a literacy coach with the nonprofit KYD Network.
Roberts is a board member of Read and Write Kalamazoo and the Michigan Reading Association. She is co-founder of the Art of Planting Little Free Libraries and a member of the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the Kalamazoo Education Association.
Roberts earned bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in the Art of Teaching and a master’s in educational leadership, all from WMU.
Corrigan replaces Mike Hughes, who became the principal of Linden Grove Middle School in 2022. Retired KPS Director of Elementary Education Judy D’Arcangelis has been serving as the interim principal at Winchell this school year. Roberts will replace Jeremy Andrick, who is leaving for a central administration position with another district.
The district has opened the search for a new principal for Indian Prairie and hopes to fill the position before the beginning of the next school year.
